The punishment of the slaves of Rome, will in fact fall on the discretion of the Dominii (Frees).  Any Imperial slave, except for the servus and serva prima (first male and female slaves), will and can be administered punishment by any Dominii Civis (Free Citizen) of Rome.

Note: Slaves, any action that displeases a Dominii (Free) can be cause for punishment, so be aware of what you are doing at all times.  Most Dominii (Free) would far rather be enjoying your presense and service rather than constantly riding you about a simple issue which you should know better than to behave like but all of us have our limits and once crossed they will punish, so, why tempt, do as expected and be pleasing in all you do and say.
 

The means of punishment will include but are not limited to:  lecture, cage, and whip.  And in some instances, with your participation, or lack of it, will include death by starvation.  You have chosen to be a slave. So, act and think as one in Rome.  Bring honor to the collar you wear.  Yes, it is fine to play around when the Dominii (Free) are taken care of, but dont let it get in the way of serving or chores.  This can bring you to where you really dont wish to be.  At the business end of a Dominii's (Free's) whip.

On a final note, Rome is aware there are those who portray slaves who are what are known as painsluts or humiliation/degradation sluts etc and for whom the threat of punishment as in the normal case of the whip etc can seem on the surface a promise of a treat.  However, there are plenty of Romans who are capable of spotting such a response in a slave and becoming shall we say... more creative in order to assure that you get the message that this IS punishment and done not because you, as a person are disliked, but rather your behavior which is the issue and which is expected to be modified so that the punishment need not be repeated again.
